The GROW symbol resembles a cross, but more specifically a cross that needs to be picked up and carried. Our focus on Christ becomes more focused as our community grows, and our relationships deepen to be a people living out the Gospel.
GROWING is central to our church’s theme verse from Mark 8:24b “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me.”
Taking up your cross might not seem like growing at first glance until you realize what Jesus meant when he said it. Someone carrying a cross (the instrument of their execution) was a public display of what their life resulted in. The cross is also part of the gospel, or the good news, that defines our faith. Intentionally growing in the Lord is a public and private journey of becoming more and more like Jesus Christ everyday. A translation for someone living in the 1990’s would be: think W.W.J.D.?
“GROWING” at GCC means living the good news as seen in your personal life and church life the way the Lord intended it. GROWING does not mean that: you will become rich if you’re a ‘real’ Christian, you will have no conflict in your family, or that your personality will dramatically change so that you are creepily upbeat about everything going on around you. In order to GROW, we must be real with each other. This genuine growth will be seen in TRIOs and Neighborhood Groups.
